Prof. Mehdi Vahdati from Imperial College London visited Tsinghua Turbo Lab

2019-10-08

In the morning of 19th September, 2019, Prof. Mehdi Vahdati and his team from Imperial College London visited Tsinghua Turbo Lab to have an academic seminar.

Prof. Vahdati is world-famous expert in turbomachinery aeroelasticity, and he leads the Aeroelasticity Group in the Vibration University Technology Centre (VUTC) sponsored by Rolls-Royce plc. His research focuses on the modelling of fan blade flutter, turbine and compressor forced response, stall and surge, and aeroacoustic and aeroelastic phenomena. In recognition for his contributions to Rolls-Royce plc, he was awarded the title Rolls-Royce Research Fellow at Imperial College London in 2001. Prof. Vahdati has published more than 120 conference and journal papers, his Google Scholar citations reach 3236, h-index reaches 21, and i10-index reaches 44. Regarding academic services, he is currently an Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Turbomachinery.

In the seminar, Prof. Vahdati first gave a brief introduction about Rolls-Royce VUTC. Then, he introduced the latest research of Imperial College regarding Aero-engine fan/compressor flow instability. Following Prof. Vahdati’s speech, Dr. Fanzhou Zhao from Imperial College gave a presentation on CFD simulations of multistage axial compressor rotating stall and deep surge. There were warm communications and discussions throughout the seminar between researchers from Imperial College and Professors and Students from Tsinghua Turbo Lab, especially on the modeling details of compressor flow instability. The professional skills were improved, and the international horizons were expanded. Finally, there was a brief discussion about possible future cooperation between Imperial and Tsinghua.
