Aero-engine theory and design

2016-09-13

Introduction of Prof. Andrew Heyes

Prof. Andrew Heyes is the well-know aero-engine specialist. He got his ph.D from Manchester University. He worked in Leeds University and Imperial University as professor and  worked for  Rolls-Royce as an advanced technologist within the applied science laboratory. He is now the head of department in Strathclyde University. He is the fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Higher Education Academy (HEA). His research interest is in the study of extreme flows, such as in the combustor and hot sections of gas turbines or in power station circuit breakers, and the development of non-intrusive, optical, flow diagnostic techniques to make such studies possible.

Introduction of the Course

This course focuses in the field of aero-engine theory and design, including gas turbine cycle, layout characteristic and turbomachine parametric design, etc. This course is based on well-know book "Jet Propulsion".

The main contents in the 5 days course are:

1. The new efficient aircraft: requirement and background.

2. The aerodynamics of the aircraft.

3. The creation of thrust in a jet engine.

4. The gas turbine cycle.

5. The principle and Layout of Jet

6. Elementary fluid mechanics of compressible flow

7. Selection of fan pressure ratio, specific thrust and bypass ratio

8. Dynamic scaling and dimensional analysis

9. Turbomachinery: compressors and turbines

10. Component characteristics

11. Engine matching off design
